Rudy Boesch was 72 years old, a retired Navy SEAL with decades of service, and the breakout heart of the very first Survivor. Blunt, hilarious, and endlessly quotable, he formed an unlikely alliance — and a genuine friendship — with the openly gay Richard Hatch, a pairing that quietly made television history in 2000.
He backed up the charm with grit, becoming the oldest person ever to win an individual immunity challenge, a record that still stands. At the final three he lost the marathon final immunity to Kelly Wiglesworth by absent-mindedly lifting his hand off the idol, and she sent him out in third. He returned at 75 for All-Stars, but a bad ankle ended it early. Rudy passed away in 2019 at 91 — an American original, beloved by the whole fandom.
