Greg Buis was Borneo's resident free spirit — a Brown anthropology graduate who wandered the first season to his own frequency, holding a coconut to his ear as a 'phone' and leaving everyone unsure how much of the flake act was real. Underneath it he played sharper than he let on, making the merge before Tagi voted him out ninth: the first jury member in Survivor history.
Then he authored one of the franchise's original iconic moments. At the final Tribal Council, rather than just cast his vote, Greg made finalists Richard Hatch and Kelly Wiglesworth each pick a number between one and ten — Richard guessed seven, Kelly guessed three — then voted for Richard anyway, part of the 4-3 that crowned the show's first Sole Survivor. He admitted later he'd made up his mind long before; the number game was pure Greg, messing with them to the end.
