The story

Dirk Been was one of the youngest castaways on Borneo — a wholesome dairy farmer who brought his Bible to the island and a wide-eyed earnestness to the original Tagi tribe. Naive to the cutthroat game taking shape around him, he leaned on faith and good intentions in a setting that rewarded neither.

As Richard Hatch quietly assembled the first alliance, Dirk found himself on the outs and was voted out in twelfth. An innocent abroad in the season that wrote the rules everyone else would learn to play by.
