Survivor: Marquesas · Season 4

Episode Guide

How Survivor: Marquesas unfolded, week by week.

  1. 1Back to the BeachFeb 21, 2002Sixteen players land in the Marquesas split into the Maraamu and Rotu tribes, and Maraamu is a mess from day one. The tribe fractures into hard workers and a looser faction led by a young Rob Mariano, and after dropping the opener they turn on Peter Harkey, a chiropractor whose bossy energy hadn't won him any friends. Peter is voted out first, 5-2-1.
  2. 2Nacho MommaFeb 28, 2002Maraamu keeps losing and keeps bickering, the worker-versus-slacker divide only hardening. Patricia Jackson, an older, outspoken member who'd clashed with Rob's crew, ends up the target, voted out 4-3 as the tribe continues to come apart at the seams.
  3. 3No Pain, No GainMar 7, 2002Maraamu's losing streak rolls on, and Rob's faction makes its boldest move yet, turning on the tribe's own leader. Hunter Ellis, the capable ex-Navy fighter pilot who'd been trying to whip the camp into shape, is blindsided 4-2, his work ethic counting for nothing against Rob's numbers.
  4. 4The Winds TwistMar 14, 2002A Day-10 swap reshuffles both tribes and scatters old loyalties: Rob, Sean, and Vecepia land on Rotu, while Paschal, Neleh, and Kathy join Maraamu. In the fallout, Sarah Jones, short on allies after the shuffle, is voted out 4-1.
  5. 5The End of InnocenceMar 21, 2002Over on Rotu, the tight 'Rotu 4' of John Carroll, Tammy, Zoe, and Robert run the show, and they have no patience for anyone not playing their way. Gabriel Cade, well-liked but openly there 'for the experience' rather than the win, unsettles John with that attitude, and Rotu votes the laid-back Gabriel out 7-1.
  6. 6The UnderdogsMar 28, 2002Maraamu, still the snakebit tribe, is back at Tribal yet again. Gina Crews, scrambling to find a foothold with the shuffled group, can't pull the numbers to protect herself and is voted out 3-1.
  7. 7True LiesApr 4, 2002The tribes merge into Soliantu at ten, and the Rotu alliance walks in holding the numbers. Boston Rob Mariano, brimming with confidence but stranded outside the majority, is the obvious first target and is voted out 7-2-1, his debut run ending well short of the merge's spoils. He would, of course, be back.
  8. 8Jury's OutApr 11, 2002Here is where Survivor changes. John Carroll, the brash leader of the dominant Rotu alliance, is so sure he's running the game that he never sees the counter-move coming. Paschal, Neleh, and Kathy, treated as second-class members of the alliance, quietly join Vecepia and Sean and pull in Robert 'the General' to flip the math. John is blindsided 6-3 as the first member of the jury, the first time a controlling alliance had ever been toppled from power.
  9. 9Two Peas in a PodApr 25, 2002With the coup underway, the new majority sets about dismantling the rest of the Rotu 4. Zoe Zanidakis, one of John's loyal core, is the next to fall, voted out 7-1 and sent to the jury.
  10. 10The PrincessMay 2, 2002The pick-off continues, and Tammy Leitner, the sharp, competitive reporter who'd been a pillar of the old alliance, can't claw the numbers back. Tammy is voted out 5-2, the third member of the jury.
  11. 11Marquesan VacationMay 9, 2002The new alliance turns on one of its own architects. Robert 'the General' DeCanio, who'd flipped to help build the majority, has become a threat in his own right, and the group cuts him loose 5-1, sending the General to the jury.
  12. 12A Tale of Two CitiesMay 16, 2002Down to five, the alliance keeps thinning, and Sean Rector, the outspoken schoolteacher who'd been a loud, central voice all game, runs out of numbers. Sean is voted out 3-2 and joins the jury, leaving a final four of Vecepia, Neleh, Kathy, and Paschal.
  13. 13The Sole SurvivorFinaleMay 23, 2002Finale night delivers one of the most jaw-dropping Tribals the show has ever filmed. At the final four, with Vecepia immune, the vote deadlocks 2-2 between Kathy and Neleh, and the revote ties again. With no idols in the game and no unanimous decision, the rules force a rock draw, and Paschal English, the gentle Georgia judge who'd never received a single vote all season, draws the purple rock and is eliminated by pure chance. The final-three immunity then sends Kathy to the jury, leaving Vecepia Towery and Neleh Dennis at the end. The jury rewards Vecepia's patient, under-the-radar game over Neleh, who'd come on strong only late, and Vecepia wins 4-3 to become the Sole Survivor.
