Joel wanted Chet to quit. Just walk off and save everyone the trouble, since the gentle hairdresser was nursing a bum ankle, couldn't keep up in challenges, and read as pure dead weight to the strong-guy crew running Airai. Chet wouldn't do it. He smiled, hung on, and made the Fans actually go to Tribal and write his name down if they wanted him gone that badly.
They got their chance on one of the roughest nights of the season — a double exit on Fans vs. Favorites. Penner's infected knee blew up first, the medical team hauled him off for emergency surgery, and the tribe still had a vote to make. So they finished the job and sent Chet out fourteenth, the injured, easygoing underdog who outlasted everybody's patience and never gave them the satisfaction of quitting.
